Default $95 oil change?!?!

Tell me i'm not nuts here. Had the local Lexus dealer phone to advise that it's been a few months and that i need an oil change. I asked them how much for an oil change. She told me $94.95 for the premium oil change which was the 0w20 oil. After i picked myself off of the floor, i then asked why would a 14 year old car now have to have 0w20 instead of the recommended 5w30? She didn't have an answer for me.

WOW! talk about an expensive oil change. Just had my indie do it 3 days ago in 15 minutes in and out for $40 taxes in. Now that the snow if almost melted i'll do the next one on my own.

seems like oil changes have gotten cheaper. Back in the day, a lowly BMW 3 commanded $130 in Greenwich, CT, talking about 2007. Suddenly, around 2010, it would be $54.95 (below cost) in northern, NJ. What I am saying, it will be whatever the locale will pay. It's gone back up, BMW is maybe $85 with a coupon, but to buy BMW oil @ retail is $8/qt. when the car takes 6.8 quarts.

This is why DIY is king on all cars--an LS430 needing 5.4 qts can do Mobil 1 with WIX XP for about $20. But if you can't, I dunno if you want synth I would be afraid of the switcharoo. My uncle ran a shop and he had problems with techs doing that, so they stopped using bulk oil for synth and poured from quart bottles.

What I mean is this. Your LS430 never came with synth, but you want it. So I charge you for it but didn't use it. You caught me. I say oh sorry bout that your car didn't come with it so no harm.

$95 is way too much. But on the 0W20 that's probably NX oil or something.

My father would't let me drive a car until I learned all about maintenance. To this day, fifty some years later, I still do ninety percent of the work on three cars, a Ford F250, two boats and a diesel motor coach. There is not enough money in this world to be taking them to a shop on a regular basis.

I had an oil leak on the diesel where the oil filter housing mounts to the oil cooler. Gasket was worth about $1.00, but total came to $1600.00. Go figure.

Anyway, I can change oil faster in any of these rigs five times faster than I can take it to a shop. The Lexus cars are an hour if I'm slow at it. Way easier to do it yourself.

i've always done oil changes on every vehicle i've owned. Due to the fact i purchased this baby late October just before the snow fell, there was no way i'm doing an oil change in the cold or snow. Indie has done it twice for me now and i will for sure be able to do the next two myself before winter hits again.

Just thought it was ridiculous the amount that they wanted. I had to ask her twice if the price was correct!

0W-20.is incorrect oil.for an LS430 because It lacks necessary shear strength..(google it)

Use only synthetic 5W-30 or, better yet, 0W-30.

Lexus sells you what they buy in bulk...newer cars specify 0W-20...which, in my opinion, is not the best way to go.

Why did the manufacturer do that?

Because the same engine oil used in EPA efficiency/mileage tests must be specified in the service manual.

As an aside, our illustrious EPA allows the auto manufacturers to run 100 % gasoline when generating MPG data.

The majority of fuel sold in the U.S. is "gasahol" which is 10-15% alcohol which has lower energy content than pure gasoline, so actual real world mileage ratings are always lower than advertised..but I digress.

Hey, a fellow LS owner from Manitoba! Was it Birchwood Lexus that called? Honestly, I went once to a Great Canadian Oil Change for an oil change for my old Hyundai. Cost me $95 full synthetic. That was the first and last time I'll ever go there again. However, I think that that's the going rate for chains and dealers. For something like an oil change, there's no reason to not DIY or bringing to an indie.

OP was that $94.95 price in CAD? If so, that would be ~$71.37 USD, which isn't unreasonable for a Synthetic LOF

I was at local Lexus dealer a few weeks ago, iirc synthetic oil change is $90. I am not sure what is the expectation here? $50? Lexus dealer, at least the one locally, has free food (lunch/snacks including fresh baked cookies/coffee/ice cream etc), wifi, TV, waiting room with comfy seats, desks so you can work remotely, and the list continues....

My oil change cost ~$27 (I do yearly M1 rebate) so yeah $90 is crazy expensive for oil change, but I understand that those free stuffs they have to pamper the customers while waiting cost a lot, so they gotta make money from their customers somehow.

If they have cheap oil change, but crappy waiting room with nothing to offer, I bet we will hear it here too lol

the lexus dealer here is top notch. I don't have an issue with them and they've always treated me very well with their parts department.

Yeah, $95 Cdn for the change so about $75US, and she said it was the premium oil change with 0w20, so whatever that means. She never mentioned synthetic at all. But If that's normal, then it is what it is, but like i said, i normally just do it on my own for under $30. Just caught me by surprise is all.

They prob have your car mis-coded in their system as an LS460 which does take the 0w20.

It’s your car, if you can afford it, why not? I wanted a four wheel alignment done right on my LS so I took it to my dealer for $120. Pretty outrageous but I’ll spend the extra for peace of mind, who cares.

An oil change is so easy on these cars I would personally never pay anyone to do it, but like I said, if you’re gonna pay someone to do it and can afford it bring it to the dealer, then send it

I'm been retired for 10 years. I grew up on a farm and we changed the oil in all our vehicles and implements. Bought the oil by the drum. I continued to change my own oil after college until I finally realized that "why am I doing this?". Because it was my culture, I didn't know anything else. I'm too old and feeble now to try that. I like the idea that I can make an appointment with my Lexus dealer, drop off my car in the morning and get a loaner, and return later in the day to pick up my car, serviced with premium synthetic oil, fully checked over for tread depth and brake pad thickness, and any other thing they might find, all for $95. I don't understand someone who can afford to buy a Lexus and then not be able to service it. Different strokes for different folks! Everyone entitled to their opinion. No right or wrong answer.

I did wheel alignment too at the dealer ~$100 with coupon which I thought was a great deal. I made sure my appointment was around lunch time so wife and I get to eat lunch and snacks for free. We both work remotely from their waiting room for a few hour with unlimited amount of espresso I can drink. They also wash the car and vacuum the interior. So lunch, snack, espresso, car wash, lets say those are $30, which bring the alignment at $70

An alignment is about all I would ever use a dealer for. I put a large sign in the window stating “Do Not Wash”. I don’t have four hours to buff out the swirls they introduce. If they paid me $95 I wouldn’t let them do a synthetic oil change. Sure they can perform the service but I don’t trust them to use the correct viscosity or fill it to the proper level. The oil change crew at most large Lexus/Toyota dealerships isn’t much better than your average quick change franchise. There are of course exceptions but it’s akin to allowing an unlicensed electrician do electrical work on your house. You’ll need a lawyer sooner or later playing the dealership oil change roulette wheel.
