Depends on who you ask... There is a very similar thread on the LS400 forum, and as you know, they are partial to the 1st/2nd gen cars over there... The 400 is a better looking car, but many owners who has switched state that the 430 is refined in many ways. Quiter, nicer ride, better amenities, updated drivetrain, etc..

You'll get a plethora of answers to this question.

The 04-05 LS430 is generally accepted to be one of the best cars in the world when it was in production. In some opinions, that has not changed even compared to new cars.

Yes, in my opinion the LS430 is a better car. But only buy one if you feel it's better, because you will have to pay a lot more for one.

I've owned both and they are both great cars. The LS400 is simpler with less to go wrong. If either has nav, they'll look very outdated but especially the LS400 version looks absolutely ancient Atari at this point.

Ride is similar, but the LS430 is a little more refined in everything it does. Has more little touches and bells and whistles throughout. A little faster, a little quieter, etc etc

Strong preference to the 04 - 06 refresh model personally.

Kinda figured the LS430 would be a lil more refined because it's newer, now as far as ride that's impressive of the LS400 compared to the LS430,looks aren't a big concern to me,I love a great smooth ride, reliability and durability those are my biggest concerns,I'm not really a gadget person, the less the better for me,hey man I really appreciate the feedback, thank you... Decisions, decisions, lol

I prefer the looks of 98-00 LS400 over the 01-03 LS430

if you can’t tell the difference between the 98-00 from the 97 and below
or
the 01-03 from the 04-06......

then you don’t know the LS family. You might as well get an ES

I am VERY happy with my "new" 2002 LS430. The more I drive it the more I like it.

My wife and I are already over the body style difference -- The rest more than makes up for it...

The extra space in the trunk has already been very useful for my needs. The tiny trunk in the LS400 is criminal.

Does anybody know passenger cabin space volume of LS400 versus LS430? I can find no such data...

Never mind... Just found it... 102 cu-ft versus 107 cu-ft... Quite a bit more...

Stupid question, but as far as the exterior, I do not see MUCH difference between an 02 and my 04. Slight, little things here and there; however overall it does not look much different in my eyes. Then again, this is my first Lexus, but I have been a fan for quite a while.

The LS430 is a little more refined. If you ever have to replace the starter, both are a PITA. Both cars are made very well. In terms of age, this may be the biggest difference of all. The seals and gaskets may have a little more life on the 430 vs the 400....but then again that depends on maint. intervals. I would go with what you prefer. Drive the two back to back and find the best example of one to purchase. Either way, you will be very happy. I am partial to the 430, simply because it looks amazing.

01-03 has different headlights, hood, fenders, trunk, tailights transmission, that is the differences I can think of off the top of my head.
