What is the small black rectangular rubbery piece under the trunk trim on the right side of the L emblem?

What year LS? It's a button that will open the trunk
if you have Smart Access. It's a non-functioning plug on my '01 without Smart Access.

You have smart access, if you have a black remote that you don't need to enter in the key fob to start the car. /that's smart access.
