Hi i have a friend that purchased a 2002 ls430. the car drives fine but when he puts it on reverse he has to kick it to 4k rpm just to get into gear, we brought it to lexus and they want to replace the whole trans which kicked to $11,000 ridiculous. what would be your thoughts? btw the VSC and all lights on dash are on.

Totally ridiculous quote. That should be the last time you go to that dealer. You can buy a brand new transmission for 2300 off myLparts and around 1900 from Sewell. Where is the extra 9000 coming from? Ask them that. What are they doing for 11k? You can buy a new LS for that price.
Starts as Tom says by pulling the codes and posting it here. If it turns out to be catastrophic get a good independent garage and look for a low miles used transmission or buy new from the sites above. Should be 2-4k tops.
thanks for the reply guys. ill get it scanned and see what codes come up. they wanted $6496.96 for a new trans, $617 for labor and $1,467 for converter assy. sadly this is the only lexus dealer where im at so this would be a problem. there are alot of independent shops to go to so ill be taking the car else where.
