On the "new" car (2001 Ultra) the brakes seem very mushy.
Of course they brake but I can push the pedal almost down to the floor.
Approaching a car in front of me the decelleration is slow and I was wondering what would happen in an emergency stop.
The pads show lots of life, rotors are normal. I was told this is normal with "these" cars
What are your brakes doing? Grab right away? Start slow and then grab?
Of course I dont want the brakes lock up right away.
Would you suggest to replace the brake fluid, stainless steel brake lines, different pads (Akebono)?
Fully bleed the brake fluid all 4 wheels. If you don't know how, or don't have a 2nd person to pump while you bleed the bleeder screws, have a shop do it. You probably have air in the brake lines.
Have Les Schwab or a reputable brake shop bleed the lines for you to get rid of the air that's in the system. Just ask for a brake oil flush. Should be around $70 for the whole job.
The brakes are soft as a cushion and never reach the back wall IMO.
The brakes are great on the LS so something is up with yours. I just replaced my tie rod ends with aftermarket parts at 1/3 the OEM cost and she brakes even better now. Straight as an arrow when braking hard. If yours are old and worn I recommend doing the tie rod ends. Makes a major improvement is the overall feel of the steering and braking. I went with Beck Arnley for the ends and lower ball joints from RockAuto. They are made in Taiwan and the quality has been great.
