I'm having a hell of a time getting this part out. If you don't know what it is..... Its the piece of gray plastic around the shifter stick. It has the gear labels on it. I got the chrome bezel off but Im stuck at that point..... don't want to break anything. Any one have a step by step picture diagram?

 

Its part of the shifter assembly, and the gear indicator panel might not be removable without having the whole assembly out of the car, which likely requires disassembling the center console first.

 

The 02 LS shift lever assembly looks just like the one in our Camry in which I replaced the gear indicator bulb. On the Camry, I popped the position indicator off and slid it up the shift lever shaft. I don't remember if it was held in place by screws on the side or friction tabs. I don't see any screws in the attached diagram so maybe the position indicator can be pried off.

 

I replaced mine (gray piece) without ANY problems. 4 snap-tabs and it's off. Be careful.

 

How did you replace the shifter bulb? Did you need to remove the center console? I have an 2004 LS430.

You need to take out whole trim panel. It's easy tho.
