Default oil change

This must be an old topic. What is the consensus on how often one should change the oil? I have a 2004, LS430 and live in California.

Every 5K miles I visit my dealer and spend at least $130 to test drive a new RX, HS, IS, etc. for the day, chat with the sales manager, and drink some coffee. They get bored while I'm on my day-long test drive so they occupy themselves by changing the oil, rotating the tires, and doing whatever else they think they can charge me for on my LS430.

Agree on 5k interval e3specially using synthetic - being a straight up to the bone cheapskate, I bring in my own oil and filter - 5 quart jug of 5W-30 Pennzoil Platinum Plus and 1 quart additional (LS takes about 5.5 quarts) and a Toyota purchased oil filter. I ask them to return the 1/2 quart of unused oil so I can use it next time. Reduces oil change cost by about 50-60% for synthetic oil change.

Once the CPO warranty is over in Sept 2012 I will change it myself and also switch to 0w30 weight for slightly better fuel economy.

This. Going in my for 40k mi service on Thurs, hope they don't get too 'bored' and start swapping body panels or something....

I don't use synthetic oil and change mine every 4,000 miles.

When people look at the maintenance history, they want to see oil changes at the dealer every 5k.

What's the consensus on oil filters? I noticed the OEM filter is slightly larger than the Bosch replacement. I'm wondering if the increased size is a benefit to filtration over Bosch's (supposedly) superior filtration media. I've been using Bosch for the last two times I've changed the oil myself.

I agree that is ideal. But you can document diy pretty easy in the Lexus online history. Anything I do myself or have a 3rd party do (like Costco new tires) , new brake pads, cabin and engine air filters, new tires, alignment, new wipers, PS fluid drain, new battery, I enter into the online Lexus history myself with mileage and date notation. This provides documented history and also serves me as a log of what has been done because at 56 yo I forget everything unless I write it down. ONly takes two minutes to update the service history.

Hands down the best oil filters out there are the toyota 90915-20004.
These have the best filter media for filtration.

Not sure if you can get the above anymore, but I use 90915 YZDD3 filters. Change 'em out every 7.5Kk miles myself along with a 'real' group IV synthetic. Presently have Mobil 1 Extended Performance in the crank case.
If you check the used oil analysis for this engine on sites like Bobistheoilguy.com, you will see that extended oil change intervals are quite okay as this engine consistently displays remarkably good wear data. Even with 10k intervals (and maybe a filter change during) I'm thinking the engine is the last thing that will die on this car.

The currently spec'd and available oil filter for the Toyota V8 that is in the LS430 is a pretty small oil filter. Its the exact same filter specified for the current Toyota V6. The small size of the filter concerns me a little so I will not exceed 5k OCI on the V8.

I use the Wix oil filter, and I try to stay consistent with 5k oil change intervals. great thing about this car is I cannot tell the difference in drivability after an oil change, but I could in all my previous cars. thank you elite Takumi of Lexus!!
