What was you mileage when it went bad???? and do you have it on auto tilt away?

it went bad around 60k miles. I think the reason for the failure was that i used the "magic" trick of extending it beyond the factory extended length. You know, tapping the button 8x and it extends another 1/2 inch. I supposed that is what caused the failure. I posted some photos of the ordeal (lower dash removed) on another thread.

When it was going bad, the steering column never rattled or made noises when i drove. It just slowly started to have trouble extending and retracting when the car was started or turned off.

I know this is an old thread, but did anyone ever find a resolution. I was reading somewhere else about some metal bushings that may need to be replaced, but the info was very limited.

I have had this problem on the past three LS I have owned. It only happens with lower profile tires running over rough concrete. Nobody seems to have found a real solution yet.

Take a look at service bulletin ST001-04

Universal joint replacement in the steering column.

I'm about to do this to my 98 LS400. Bulletin includes my car in this range.

See this thread for my documentation + audio recording:

Posting this here to provide future reference to others.
