Default How to remove ignition lock cylinder?

My '01 ls430 key ignition cylinder is in need of repair or replacement. I've read enough to know that I should do this while I can still turn the switch to ACC. Has anyone removed/replaced their ignition lock cylinder? Is there a button or a pin that must be pushed to release the cylinder once it's in the ACC position?

My symptoms are that the key is often difficult to insert into the cylinder lock. I've lubricated the mechanism without change. Once inserted the ignition works fine. I've also tried all my spare keys and they encounter the same difficulty.

Well, I removed my ignition lock cylinder and took it to a locksmith. He says he'll rebuild it and I'll have it back tomorrow. A Lexus replacement part is about $500!! I don't expect my bill will be anywhere near that, but we'll see.

If you're having any hint of trouble with your ignition lock be sure to take care of it as soon as possible because things get really expensive if you can't turn the key to the ACC position to assist with the lock cylinder removal.

. . . and yes, there's a pin on the top side of the lock that has to be pushed in to facilitate the removal.

Okay! I picked up my repaired ignition lock cylinder back from the locksmith today. I had a blank key that I had them cut while I was there. Any guesses how much the lock repair and key cutting cost? Aw, come on, take a guess!

$25 total! And I stopped by the Lexus dealership on the way home, had a vanilla cappuccino, got a window seat in the showroom in a LS600h and smelled the leather all for free. A very satisfying day.

Excellent work - a little diy effort and research can save a ton of money when it comes to cars. Thanks for posting this info.

My key fits loosely in the ignition cylinder and rattles as I drive, which is driving me nuts. I may try to remove it and see if a locksmith can repair it as well. I also own an '01 LS430... wish it has a newer smart key and push button start!!

Regards,
JAT

LOL! Greg---I was thinking the same thing. However, I DO find it extremely odd his first several posts were regarding disabling the factory alarm, how to rewiring the starter/bypass relay, and where the VIN plates are located on the body panels??!

J/K!!

(ps...that $25 price is amazing! great job!)

This is exactly what I need but the link is broken; it points to:

Can anybody point me to a way to remove the ignition lock cylinder to an LS430??

(preferably without the smart key system)

Insert the key. Turn to ACC. Press down the release pin on top of the cylinder and pull out the lock.

Yes, but how to access the top of the cylinder? The manual shows how to press down on the release only after the whole steering column is disassembled. I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Do you have to take apart the dashboard to acess the release? Which parts of the dashboard? I tried to pry stuff out but it looks like I will damage the dashboard if I continue. If anybody knows the specific steps needed to access the release I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
