Thinking of upgrading my 98 to the 04 & wondered how much quicker to 60mph the 04 is with the 6 spd auto? Anyone compare driving the 400 vs the '04 430?
'04 does it in 5.9s supposedly. I would say that's probably a good 1 s. faster. The '01-'03 did it in 6.3, so doubt the LS430 would be slower than the LS400. You're probably in the 6.7 or 6.9 area?
I owned a 98LS sometime ago, and i can confidentially say for sure the '04 feels quicker, especially off the line. Its hard to compare drivablity, considering the current condition of the car plays a big role, but the steering feels tighter and braking is stronger.
Best thing to do is drive them side to side. Driving the UL with air suspension felt a little different from my old LS due to reduced brake and acceleration dive for instance.

Just for reference, the official numbers for the LS400 (2nd gen, 1st half) were 0-62 in 7.5s, but other sites are noting the 1998 (which had the 5-speed and more powerful engine) 0-60 of 6.6s.
So, not too much difference from the '04 LS I don't think.

According to Lexus, the 98-00 LS400 with its upgraded engine and transmission (290Hp Vs 260 and 5speed vs 4 on the 95-97) did 0-60 in 6.3 and the quarter in 14.7 or 14.9 I cant remember.
I do remember the 98LS was extremely quick and powerful at the time of its introduction. Nothing short of a Mercedes V12 came close.

You very well might be right. The '98 numbers are not from Lexus but from some site I found. The 6.3 might just be right because I remember when the LS430 first came out, I was like "what the? bigger engine and same numbers?"...
I really did not understand how Toyota came out with a 4.3L engine and could only muster the same numbers as the 4.0L. I guess the 430 got a much heavier butt.

The 4.3L has much better low end torque, and i can defiantly attest to that. You can defiantly feel more power around town.

Everything is torque... 290hp with 254 ft*lb is must different than 290hp with 310 ft*lb of torque. I agree, the LS430 probably feels stronger off the line than the LS400.
