Hi- i purchased a 2002 LS430 about 2 months ago. It has 49,000 miles. I recently noticed on first start in the morning that when I initially turn the ignition key (before starting the car) I hear a humming noise that lasts for about 10-15 seconds. Seems to be coming from the engine area. I'm thinking it has something to do with the fuel pump??? Is this normal. Thanks for any help or info. Jay
Most of the "humming" of cars on first position is the fuel relay activating and the pump cycling. It shouldn't last 10-15 seconds though, only 5 seconds maybe. Also, you turn your keys to on without cranking and it lasts for 10-15 secs. or you've started and it continue to hum for 10-15 seconds?
If the engine is running already, it's humming, it could also be the antibrake system actuating and checking. Either way, I'd bring to Lexus to make sure it's normal and I don't hear this on my LS430, atleast not for 10-15 seconds.
Noise happens when ignition key is in the "on" position before cranking. Was not hearing it previously. Gonna bring it to Lexus as I also need to get them to look at a little bit of a high idle at cold start.
Is there any way to get rid of the steering wheel hum as it moves in or out of position?
Sorry to hijack, but I have not heard a hum like you are talking about.
Yeah, disable it. I don't think that noise will go away as it's just the motor noise. I guess Lexus could have tried to use a quieter motor, but it is what it is. Just like the turn signals, the MDX I had was so silent, I'd actually forget to deactivate it some times. The LS430, straight from a Toyota bin and loud as anything.

What hum? My 04 wheel is completely silent during activation. You must have a defective motor.
Hi- reporting back. Dealership was not able to replicate the noise. Did a full diagnostic check while there and there were no codes showing up. Noise has not re-appeared since I got the car back. Also, my retracting steering wheel is pretty much silent too in it's operation.
Are you possibly referring to the brake master cylinder pressurizing? does this in the morning, and every 6 or so hard stops. Note: the car does not have to be started for master cylinder to do its thing.

My '03 turn signal flasher was silent, the '05 clicks. I liked the silent better. I doubt it's a plug-in unit like vehicles used to use, but wonder if the noisemaking-flasher-solenoid device thingee might be retrofittable. Or if you can even get the old silent style anymore....

my 2000 es300 recently has similar problem too. When i put in the key (ACC position), i can hear a loud humm (buzz) in the engine comp area. It goes on for 5 sec or so, sometimes longer. Is it something about to fail?
