Our 60 lb dog stepped on the console cup holder in our 2002 LS430 and now the cup holder will not stay retracted. Is thre a fix or do I need to spend upwards of $200 to get it replaced? I suspect it is "sprung." This cannot be a unique problem.

Reason: spelling error
yeah someone else had this same problem and someone else wrote the exact (couple) steps involved in taking it apart and bending a little springy prong thing back into place to keep it retracted... sorry but i don't remember much else, but the directions seemed really simple, i do remember that much.
Oh those dogs... I happen to have removed the center unit where the shifter is to replace the ash tray to storage console yesterday and I can guide you to how to remove up to where you can see the cupholder unit. Once you see it, you might be able to figure out how it latches to stay closed.
Anyway, remove the lowest center console trim (the trim where the heated seat, rear sunshade, etc. buttons are) by pulling straight out. I used two plastic twist ties, made a loop and put onto the two sides and pulled straight out.
At this point, twist off the shifter ****.
Once that lower piece is out, then the center lower piece that has the shifter and tray, is held on by four clips at the four corner. Simply pull straight up at the four corners CAREFULLY... and they will pop out. If you're not careful, you can break one of the clips.
The shifter does not come off, put the chrome plate surrounding it does. Once the center trim is off, you can see the cupholder and the mechanism behind it clearly. Hopefully you can figure out the mechanics to get it to lock.
