I have a 2001 LS430 Ultra, the front headlight covers are cloudy looking, what is the proper method to remedy this?

what do you mean by cloudy? could be scratches or just oxidization...toothpaste it first to see if it makes a difference. A pic would help us to better help you

 

Not scratches, kind of looks like condensation, but its not.

Someone told me they sell something specifically for this situation that makes them look clear again, any ideas?

 

the product your thinking of is Meguiar's PLastiX...IMO, whitening toothpaste works just as well

here's what it did to my headlights

 

I had the same issue with my 01 LS. Until I looked closer and found out they were covered with thick clear plastic I peeled them off and now they look brand new. If yours don't have those protective film, you can try what they've suggested, toothpaste works great.

 

And thereafter keep them waxed regularly with a good UV-inhibiting car wax. I've been doing this for years and based upon comparing my cars to other cars of the same year models, I'm firmly convinced that this preventative mtce. works. For example, the headlights on my '95 Supra that still look brand new while 95% of other Supra lights were oxidized and nappy-looking long before now (and most have been replaced).

 

about the toothpaste, so I just applied toothpaste onto my headlight and wipe it down?

 

Whatever abrasive you use -- toothpaste, car polish, plastic polish -- you have to use some elbow grease (or a random orbital polisher, etc.) to cut the oxidized surface layer off. It's just like removing badly oxidized paint -- gotta abrade it away.

 

I use plastix and it works fantastic to make them look clear. Some plastix and some towels and it looks great. Or I take a polisher instead of towels and it looks great after that to with plastix. You could do the wetsand method also with fine grit sandpaper.
