Default Extended warranty or not??

After the handshake on the vehicle price, the finance manager takes you aside to shake some more money from your wallet. The list of after-sale items included an extended warranty, Lojack, tire warranty, rim warranty, paint chip cover and probably some others that I forgot.

I asked if I could think about it and let him know and he said ok. So my thinking is to go to this forum and ask the experts. What after market items are mandatory, what is nice to have, and what is a waste of money????

thanks

to me i would only get lojack if you live or go to high danger areas a lot

those paint protection stuff and such? forget it? i don't see how useful they could be

for the extended warranty,it's up to you. if you keep your car very very long, it could be useful. if you mod your car, i start to see the value of it dropping.

for me, i declined them all

Consider the cost of extended. Take this money and apply it to a savings account for future repairs. In essence, insure yourself with yourself. Rarely will you be at a loss. (This is why it's pushed)

Your purchasing a reliable automobile. You'll need collision and theft insurance, why Lo-jack? If it's stolen, not easy to do, your insured.
Chances are Lo-jack was installed to protect the dealer's new car asset and they would like to pass the cost on to you. (Also why it's pushed)

Agreed, deny it all and prepare for any repairs with a thousand or two.

If you are referring to the 3M Clear Bra type of paint protection for the front end, I would consider getting that. I have multiple chips on the front of the car at 20K miles that would have been avoided with the film. Had it on my S4 and it really made a difference. But check around - the dealer may not be the best price for this stuff.

If you are talking about the dealer paint protector/sealant - save your money. Nothing more than a fancy wax job.

Last year they tried to sneak an extended warranty into my contract on a RX400. You can wait up to 3 years to buy the Lexus extended warranty . Some Toyota dealers will sell it to you much cheaper than your Lexus dealer.

even for the clear bra you can most of the time get it for much cheaper from outside

Default Extended warranty or not?

The NAV System on this car with the backup camera, collision avoidance system, sensors, GPS, rain sensor windshield and voice activated things most certainly will break. If I am covered by the factory warranty for 4 yrs/50K miles, seems like the extended warranty for those items might be a good thing.

So put the money into a CD at 5% and keep rolling it over???

I traded in a 98 Mercedes that ate through the wallet for over $6K in repairs, not including maintenance, after the warranty. I know,,, this is not a Mercedes.

When I picked up my 04 LS430, I declined all the offers from the dealer. They mark up everything with ridiculous margin.

I got the Lexus factory extended warranty through a contact I found here on prime at close to wholesale price. (do a search, I think it's Toyota of Greenfield in Midwest)

The clear bra can be done for ~500-800, where the dealer wanted over 1k for it. I did get the lojack at ~699, where they were offered to me at ~799 or ~899 (can't remember exact). They started to drop the price after i declined everything.

The extended warranty is the most ridiculous offer. They offered their own to me at 2k+. After i declind, the price dropped to ~1500. Then I got the Lexus Platinum for abit over 1k.

Always shop around!

ps, there are shoddy Lexus dealers out there as well (same one that tried to sell me everything) Knowingly hid mistakes from me on several occasions when I bought the car. In addition to ZERO after sale customer service. I never expected this kind of treatment from a L dealer.

No . . . dealer charges an absurd amount that provides them a huge gross margin. If your vehicle seems prone to breaking down, purchase one from either Lexus or a reputable, nationwide provider for no more than $1500.
