Post 03 LS430 Parts Advice

Hey guys,

I need advice on parts. Firstly the power steering filter. I saw in a Car Care Nut video on YouTube that for this year LS the power steering filter is common to go. Does anyone know who makes the filter so that I can order it direct from them, or is dealer order the only way?

Secondly the transmission gasket. Does the car have an OEM gasket or is it just done with a gasket maker? If it does have a gasket part, who makes it? Or is dealer order the only way?

Thirdly the transmission filter. Same questions as above. Who makes it? or dealer order only? Car Care Nut says changing the transmission filter is a waste of money if you change your fluid on time but I dont know the previous service records so I might as well do it no?

Does anyone know of some quality aftermarket ones for any of these?

Thanks
MM

Didn't he say that was a rare failure because the car sat for a long time? The filter is integrated into the reservoir not a separate part AFAIK.

Transmission filter is a fine screen normally you don't need to replace it. Enter your VIN into the parts site to make sure things fit. Avoid lexuspartsnow.com their customer service is terrible.

Rear Air Filter Sub-Assembly is probably for the rear air conditioner in trunk of the Ultra Luxury trim only. I use mine rarely and have never needed to change it. (Not sure if charcoal activated). Power Steering: unaware of filter. Change the fluid and make sure the reservoir is not gummed to block fluid going through, from what I have seen. I changed mine first time at 17 years old around 150k, just because I rarely do. I do other fluids more routinely: brake fluid every 3, coolant 5, diff fluid every 60k miles or or so, trans every 10 years.

There is no power steering filter car care nut is an idiot, there is a mesh screen in the resevoir. To clean it take the resevoir out use a bottle brush and rinse it will gasoline a few times to clean out any junk left inside.

Default PS filter?

First of all, Car Care Nut is a solid mechanic, and quite knowledgeable. From what I saw in said video, he was pointing to the “filter” in the reservoir. I am in the process of taking one apart, and will post results and maybe a little “how-to”. It’s possible, based on initial impression, that this is the way to clean the only filter in the PS system. Various chemicals did very little. This filter has a very coarse media (+ screen), so it doesn’t do much. I did a flush with new fluid (dex 6) and it didn’t change the res’s appearance much. But the fluid is clean, system is quiet, so all seems well. My flush entailed removing reservoir, cleaning it, and pumping new fluid from it through the system into a container. I ran about 3 quarts through until it was definitely clean. Car is an 01 with 270k, and I’ve only owned it for about a year and 11k miles. Pump was a little noisy, which is what prompted the service. It’s a bit quieter, so I consider it mission accomplished. I would suggest an inline filter on the return if you really want to filter that system. Easy install, and easy to maintain. More to come…

CCN is certainly not an idiot he's easily one of the best Toyota/Lexus techs out there he does pretty much every type of repair possible. If you watched the video what happened is the screen was gunked up/degraded and could not be be cleaned.
