Angry transmission problem

Our 2005 LS430 with 85000 miles is getting a new transmission.l I expected tires, battery, suspension parts etc but never the transmission. Our LS400 and GS400 have more miles and no transmission problems or any unnormal problems. Seeing where lots of lexus have 200K miles and more, so this was disapointing.

Why?
Who told you this is necessary?

In case of 85000 miles, I'd rather think it's an ECU's soldering cracking issue. A skilled guy would fix it with almost no cost.

I would try ECU first. Some of the 2004-2006 models had a transmission recall. My 2004 did and ever since that the ECU has been messed up. I threw a lot at it thinking it was transmission problems. I was getting a code indicator that said one of the solenoids was stuck open. I had the transmission broken down and the solenoid replaced. It did nothing. I am about to send mine over to SIA electronics. They do those sort of repairs. I saw someone with a similar issue to mine and this cleared it up for them. Mechanics always want to say “replace the transmission”. I was told this so many times but there is nothing wrong with it. Many just don’t want to touch a sealed transmission such as mine.

The ECU for 2004-2006 models is located in the engine compartment room and it is the often case that the heat cycle damages the soldering points of it. If I were you, I'd simply check the inside of the ECU using a good magnifier and carefully see soldering points where bigger sized resistors are soldered.

Following resistors should be checked especially. It is important to use a good magnifier and your good eyes.
R216, R217, R235, R236, R239, R241, R304, R305, R306, R307, R328, R329, R393, R738, R740, 752, R767, R769, R910, R912, R918, R919, R920, R921.

Another simple choice is to re-solder all those resistors especially in this area first.

Default Thanks

Interesting, I didn’t realize it is in the engine bay. I always thought it was behind the glove box.

I’m going to pull mine and give it a look tomorrow. Should be fairly easy since it’s just right there in the engine bay.

Highly surprising that the transmission has to be replaced that early. Are you sure it’s not related to torque converter issues? In 90 percent of times the problem is in that area plus fluid issue.

How long has it been since the transmission has been serviced with a drain and fill? Does it have the appropriate amount of trans fluid?

Default Transmission fluid change?

I bought my 05’ LS 430 about a year ago with 163k miles on it. I’m at 172,350 ish miles now. It came with alot of service history records but I can’t find if the previous owner ever did a transmission fluid change or a drain & fill. At this many miles would you suggest getting the transmission serviced? I read that some people say not to do it at this many miles. Thanks guys.

Absolutely NO. With that many miles and no definitive trans history don’t touch the fluid. Unless you are having problems leave everything as is.

Yes, service it.

There is a persistent myth (though rapidly disappearing, thankfully) that once a transmission hits a certain mileage, leave it be. That makes the exact logic as saying, “If the engine went 20k w/o an oil change, DON’T EVER CHANGE IT.” Literally the same amount of sense.

Personally I’d do a drain and fill out the cooler lines for the total volume. Add some Lubegard to it to help dissolve the varnishes that develop on solenoid valves and in valve bodies and cause the majority of transmissino problems.

Definitely worthwhile to go ahead and service it. Here's my experience doing drain and fills on the A761E.

The 06 has a strange delay shifting from 5th to 6th on a cold start that was present before any fluid service. It had all original fluid up until 179,000 miles when I did a drain and fill on it, and another at 186,400 miles. It continues to shift and drive fine aside from the aforementioned cold start shift. I'd say you're fine using Idemitsu (or even Aisin) fluid in your 05. That said, the only way to get actual licensed WS fluid is to purchase it from Toyota as they don't license 3rd party fluids for meeting their specifications.

Without knowing the history of the transmission fluid changes, the fluid might have built up enough varnish to keep the clutches of your transmission engaged. Once the new fluid is introduced after such a long period of time, it also introduces cleaning properties, that may remove the varnish and this may keep the clutches from engaging, causing slippage. If your transmission already has issues, of course you have no choice. If it's working fine, I wouldn't go there. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

what is the best transmission fluid to go with? Is there a product number so I can find it and not get the wrong oil. I might take it to a certified Lexus service center just for them to do it.
