With the two being essentially the same price per quart (notice that the gray thing is 5qt, while Toyota is a "pack of 6" (so 6qt total), I wouldn't even entertain the idea of using non-Toyota fluid.
It will be the "same" when all their specs are the same such as viscosity at various temperatures, density and longevity are identical. I remember reading a comparison chart somewhere of many different ATF fluids, Toyota included, and all those that claimed to be "just as good if not better than Toyota" were lower viscosity, especially at higher temperatures, making them unsuitable for anything other than an emergency situation (and then to be promptly flushed and replaced by Toyota fluid). Theoretically, the gray bottle could be identical, but with the price being the same, why bother?

I was thinking the same thing. At 10 cents a quart difference there's no sense buying anything but "Toyota" fluid.

Some online info:

Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. is a Japanese petroleum company.

Idemitsu is the second largest petroleum refiner in Japan, after Nippon Oil

Idemitsu began supplying lubricants in the United States in the late 1970s and we built our state-of-the-art blending facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana, in 1992. Since then, Idemitsu has continuously expanded its business both in the United States and globally.

Idemitsu works directly with leading OEMs to develop automatic transmission fluids which exactly match their specifications, resulting in better performance, fuel economy and wear protection. Did you know that Idemitsu manufactures the actual ATF some automakers use to fill their vehicles’ transmissions at the factory?

They state they are an OEM suppler of lubricants and fluids. For that price difference not so much to sway me either even though it may be the same fluid.

Safe bet, that is what I did. The guys in the RX300 forum have mentioned using Royal Purple ATF in place of the T-IV, but I'm not doing that. I ordered a 6-pack from that same seller yesterday and it was only $37.50. Either way it's cheaper than their 12-pack. I need to go ahead and order another one so i can do a few of drain and refills on our 'new to us' RX300. I don't feel comfortable switching fluids that the manufacturer specifically said to use (unless their is a TSB stating otherwise).

Mobil 1- 3309 Same? YES
https://www.mobil.com/English-GB/Pas...Mobil-ATF-3309

Aisin T-IV Same? YES
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...356083&jsn=425

Idemitsu does offer a diverse ATF line with 9 products each one specific to the individual import manufacturers. This definitely sets them apart from a Castrol or a Valvoline.

Any other fluid claiming backwards and/or "catch-all" compatibility is just a marketing ploy.

Edit- fixed the duplicate link

Toyota T-IV is supplied by the company named EMG Marketing G.K. according to the information from the HQ.

Idemitsu supplies lubricants like Toyota MP 2, Power Steering Fluid EH and others but not T-IV.

So if a oil change shop used multi vehicle stuff can the real atf 4 stuff be used for the next drain and fill?

Here In sweden they charge 20$ per quart for the Toyota type IV.
I went with Mobil 1 3309 which I concluded was same same.
I have have poured 20+ quarts into two LS400.

Worked well . Have driven ca ca 30 kmiles after change

Thats a good price for a 6 pack.I'd jump on it if I hadnt already with the mobil 3309 that I paid 87 dollars for a 12 pack last year on Amazon.Especially seeing the trend in pricing noted on this thread.

A price increase trend, supply and demand, they see we want it, they got it, and the price goes up. Just like convertible cars, in the spring and summer, if the top goes down, the price goes up!
