Need help - 99 LS400 making grinding noise when accelerating quickly from a dead stop
Please go easy on me, I am not knowledgeable in automotives.
As of the last few months I have been hearing this grinding when accelerating from a dead stop. It only happens when I accelerate hard, like for example when trying to beat someone off the light cause a lane merges ahead. I believe that the grinding has something to do with when the front of the car pitches upwards. It may pitch a little more than it should because the shocks don’t really work anymore. (Instead of absorbing shock I bounce)
I’ve had a master mechanic buddy speculate that due to the poor suspension and a potentially bad drive shaft that the drive shaft may be moving too much vertically on acceleration and it’s rubbing. But he hasn’t actually taken a look at it in terms of getting under the hood.
I had the Lexus dealership take a look at it when I took it in for an oil change and they came up inconclusive and proceeded to try and convince me to buy a new car (I’m good, I’m in love with this car).
I guess what I’m asking is, has anyone had a similar situation? I’ve heard of my model having engine shake due to rubber mounts going bad but I don’t really notice any. The car still drives and as long as I feather the gas real quick to get rolling and the accelerate quickly I can avoid it all together.
The car has 130k miles and I’ve heard these can last to around 300k. I’m hoping I can do my best to try and make it to that point.

Rapid acceleration from a dead stop is NO way to make it last to 300k miles..
FAST starting , stopping, and turning is what wears out a automobile....
and I agree with Yamae about motor mounts letting the fan hit the shroud..
seek professional help and see what they say and then come back and let us know.. good luck..

Try replacing the transmission mount first. Go with an OEM Lexus part, I believe its only $40 from what others have said and that should take care of the grinding. I'm assuming its your driveshaft that is pitching at the wrong angle and hitting something most likely.
