Default Replace tranny or live with noise?

Go used? What's a good price for used?

99 ls400

Here's why, the whining in 1st and 2nd gear is in the tranny. Other than the noise the transmission emits no other noise and shifts great, no slipping etc. Fluid was changed, but not filter. When draining fluid found no material in it.

Was thinking, live with the whine or replace tranny.

A better question would be, live with awesome performing but whining noise in 1st and 2nd gear or replace?

get a used, they can be had for 300 bux at a wreck yard, there cheap cause they rarely break and less demand, yet a transmission for a chevy cavalier will go for at least 600 bux go figure.

I had the same whining on my 97' 4spd A340E tranny and a new transmission filter solved it. My old one was completely clogged with material, so it may happen 10k miles or so in the future? but for now its working great, and I've put on 3k miles since October 18' when i replaced it. Only cost me ~$20 at NAPA and came with a new gasket.

I had a failing torque converter lockup solenoid about 15k miles prior that I replaced and most likely its torque converter friction that clogged it up over time. But a new filter and a drain and fill with 2.5qts of Toyota T4 fluid fixed the whining completely.

I'll try that, ordered the gasket and filter

The material you see on the filter is the friction material from the clutch plates. All of the soft parts are also rock hard by now so you're on borrowed time. I bet if you drop the pan, you'll see your filter is full of the same material again. Eventually, you'll need to replace or overhaul the tranny.
