Default Grinding noise on deceleration

Hi everyone

My "new" car is currently at TLC in san diego getting looked over. Its a 1995 LS400.

I was just curious.. and after a search I see this is a more common problem but there was no consensus on a resolution.

Anyway, when I am slowing down from about 20-12 mph I get a grinding noise as the transmission seems to shift from gear 2 to 1. Anybody know the fix? Transmission fluid was clean and pink.

Thanks
PS - its definitely not coming from the brakes.

Interesting. I get a grinding noise when I first start my car in the morning and it sounds like it's coming from the transmission too.

Anybody got any clues on this? The mechanic is talking about ripping the transmission apart to check the parts!!!AHHH!!!

He then recanted and recommended a tranny flush and refill with type IV fluid... perhaps someone changed the fluid and used the wrong type? Could this lead to a grinding when the transmission downshifts from 2-1?

Default ***update***

Thus far, after a transmission fluid flush the problem is gone... the culprit may have been a previous transmission fluid change using the wrong fluid. I will update the thread if the scenario changes. Cross your fingers!!

Problem has occurred a couple of times since the flush. Its quite strange, almost as if the transmission doesn't want to downshift.. you know, like the feeling when you are in a manual car and you are going too slow for the gear you are in.

Anyone have any other ideas what it may be? I may perform another fluid change as that seems to have "nearly" cured the problem.

What about resetting the computer by disconnecting the battery for a while?

Yes, it is now throwing some check engine codes, but the problem was consistent before they came up.

I think they are probably completely unrelated. The codes that were thrown, per the dealer, are coming from the cats.

Can't wait until I have all of these minor issues settled. As a whole the car is really coming together. Generally drives like its brand new.. smoothe as glass on the highway after the new tires.

Is there a way to change thread title to:

"Transmission sticks in 2-1 downshift when slowing down"

or something like that.. since thats what the problem is?
