Default Fixing air control valve on power steering pump

Losing power steering fluid and exhaust blowing white smoke? your air control valve is most likely leaking. i read people just plugged it up with a bolt and washer, but some would like to keep the valve.

here's how i fixed it.

Needs
2 O-rings
air compressor nozzle

valve

with your air nozzle shoot some air in the valve and a fitting will come out. USE YOUR HAND AT THE END OF THE VALVE TO BLOCK THE FITTING FROM FLYING AWAY.

here's what the fitting inside the valve looks like. replace the 2 black O-rings, you don't have to replace the white teflon bands. reinsert the fitting back into the valve and it should be good.

O-rings are very small. might be tricky to find. if you do find some. it shouldn't cost much.

i have collected a bunch of random o-rings over time and had some that fit.

Thank you for posting this!!! I have seen no other threads show a pic of what O rings should be replaced. This thread should be of use for me and many others!

Me too.

And I agree this is a very valuable piece of repair info. Such a common failure, and most people just replace the valve (like I did) or bypass it with a plug. This seems definitely better. Even nicer would be to know specs on those o-rings.

I picked up an O-ring kit from harbor freight for 6 bucks. https://www.harborfreight.com/225-pi...ent-67677.html Has every size small to big, and is meant for high temp applications.

Hopefully this is the reason why the power steering fluid is leaking down to the alternator as well

that is incorrect. the reason the PS fluid is leaking onto you alternator is another o-ring at the bottom of the PS reservoir. almost the same o-ring size.

when this air control valve seals are compromised, they allow the PS to leak into the intake tract thus burning off during combustion, not leaking out onto the alternator.

Anyone with Metric ID and approximate thickness of this O-ring??

The (inner) diameter(s?) and width(s?) of the channels where each O-ring nestles is helpful

There are numerous grades of Viton, so will share sourcing information.

Thanks in advance for input.

@YODAONE Did you get hold of the dimensions or any place to order those o-rings?
Thanks
