Default What is the ECU?

I read a lot of posts and have seen several that had to do with the ECU. I'm still learning about my "new" 98LS and was wondering what is the ECU and where is it located and what does it do?
Thanks,
hms09

ECU ------> Electronic Control Unit
And other possible names
Engine Control Unit

Other car manufactures also call it a PCM Powertrain Control Module

Lexus shop manuals call every small computer in the car an ECU as in Electronic Control Unit. The ABS (Antilock Brake System) or Antiskid Brake System, has its own ECU, the Seats have one, the mirrors and pretty much every thing else that is electrical in the car has a small ECU.
Most always it is located either under or behind the glove box.
I see Puredrifter beat me on this one, and since this ECU also controls the transmission it is more than just an Engine control.
