Navigation System
I have a 98 LS400 which doesnt have a factory NAV system and I want to buy an aftermarket system and install it in the car. Does anyone have any experiences they could share with me, along with any suggestions as to which system is the best. Is it worth it to spend $1000 for the NAV system or is it just a waste of money? Thanks in advance for the help.

This has been talked about many times in the Electronics section. You might want to look for advice there. From what I've heard, Alpine seems to have one of the best after-market nav systems.

I have a Garmin StreetPilot 3 and am very happy with it. Much happier, in fact, than with the Nav system that came in my "03 LS430. The big difference, other than that you can move it from car to car, is the fact that you can do updates through a computer and not be at the mercy of the extortionate update prices that Lexus charge.

I was thinking about that model, but where do you mount it? And does it require installation or can you just stick it on? How bout ease of use and speed?

If you'd like to add the same DVD Nav. system in the new LS430 you can get this:
http://www.kenwoodusa.com/product/de..._dv2100_2.html
cllick on "demo"
Be prepared to drop some bank though....
The DVD nav. unit is 2500.00
The 7 inch touch screen is about 700.00
As for useful....Well, I just got an LS430 with the Nav/Mark Levinson option group. I thought the Nav would be useless since I have lived in my hometown for over 38 years now and I am pretty familiar with the place. (Los Angeles) However, shortly after I got the car I picked up a friend at LAX and as I was talking to him on the way home I got into a left turn lane that was two streets too early...Iwhich turned into a hotel's private street. One quick glance at the map showed me the private street actually cut through to the next street over so I didn't have to turn right out of the left turn lane (not safe and not legal) and all was good. Another cool thinig about this particular system is that it knows every restaurant, bank, atm, gas station, etc etc etc location. In an area of town you're not familiar with (easy in Los Angeles) and want a chinese restaurant? Call them up on the map...touch an icon and it tells you the name and even the phone number of the place. Gotta love the massive storage capabilities of DVD!
Anyway...I could go on and on...suffice it to say I love my nav system which is surprizing since I didn't think it would be useful.
