Also the car will not "kick down" when I am accelerating.

if I punch the throttle when cruising, it will not downshift into a lower gear...

Vacuum line maybe?

I am sure there is a cable that operates the kickdown take the engine cover off and check it

+1 on the kickdown cable being out of adjustment.

Might want to double check your fluid level too.

+1 on the cable tension. Just enough so that the cable isn't pulling nor bowed/slack from being loose. Check the vacuum hoses too.
