Exclamation OCV - VVT Filter

*1998 LS400*

So, I am currently in the process of cleaning both of the OCV ( Oil control valves ) as I had a 1354 code.

The driver side, bank 1 I presume, was easy to get to and easy to remove.

Passenger side bank 2, is proving extremely difficult to remove. I have tried a variety of methods but it will only turn back and forth but will not come out. Not even a hair.

Is there something I'm missing? Or could it be clogged catastrophically?

Looking forward to your help.

Thanks,
Z

*EDIT* problem solved after OCV bank 2 was replaced!

Passenger side OCV was very gunked up.

I was able to remove it and clean it as well as the inner channel, but it looks like I will need to replace the OCV for best results.

Don't sweat it! I preemptively messaged without taking a break to think the steps through.

A hammer and flat head go along way! Hehe.

Thanks. When I replace the bank2 OCV I'll take a pic of it. There was a decent amount of build up at the end that I was able to collect on a rag with a small socket.

What kind of symptoms do you experience when the ocv has this buildup?

It really was just from having the code P1354 come up. It hasn't come on since I reset it, but I had an oil change and cleaned both the OCV's since then.

There was a post mentioning the P1354 code can come up if there is a blockage or foreign object in the oil system. This might have been removed through the change of the oil filter in addition to my cleaning the OCV's. Can't say for sure either way.

I noticed a slight hesitation at freeway speeds. It happened very subtly but was noticeable. It's gotten better, and the throttle seems to be a little more responsive but it could be placebo.

I'm going to replace the bank 2 OCV just to be safe as it looked as though it went through some abuse.

Part number is: 153300F010 for passenger side. If I'm not mistaken.

VSC and CEL lights came on during lunch. I had ECT power on, and gave it the beans at one point. Within half a mile the lights came on.

Scanned it, and again P1354. Luckily I just ordered the Passenger OCV from Sewell Lexus.

It was 124.61$ plus shipping, no tax.

I cleaned both of them, but bank 2 especially, which didn't help. I cleared the code and removed the battery to reset the memory. Still came on after a while (much longer interval with removal of battery).

Just finished putting in the new OCV for bank 2 to clear P1354 code. Haven't taken it for a test drive yet. I cleaned the chamber again. Here are the pics I took. The new part has a different bottom opening.

I'll let you all know if the CEL and VSC lights stay off. If not, I'm moving to sludge built up and clogged OCV FIlters ** which I have on the way for a timing belt and water pump install. The valve timing could be off because of the worn timing belt I think, so that'll be checked the same time.

I really hope this is resolved soon.

I forget, but did you remove the throttle body to get them out? or just disassemble the motor?

I honestly just removed the throttle cable and linkage to the throttle body. I'm not sure if that's the right way to do it, but it worked and seemed to save a little time.

It's tricky getting the three phillips screws out, but you can remove the other sensor next to the inner most screw to help.

I think in one of the pictures you can see in the top right, the throttle body with the intake tubing positioned straight up in the air. I just rotated it. You can get away with not even removing the air filter section, but just disconnect the portion from the throttle body to the MAF.

I'm taking it on the first drive today since replacing OCV bank 2. I really hope the code stays off!

EDIT: In the last two pics of Post #4 you'll notice what was removed to get the OCV out. Those pictures represent the last step I took before having enough room to remove the OCV.
