refurbished rack and pinion for 91 LS?
Hey folks.
My rack and pinion is dripping and its loose too so i need a new one.
Have anyone tried those refurbushed ones on ebay? oem costs alot of money and it didnt hold very well. i think this is a weakness on these cars. So i dont think buying a used rack will solve the problem either. Well only for a short period i think.
I have been looking at this one. Sounds pretty good "New Seals, New Teflon Rings, New O- Rings, Insides are microfinished to spec, Lubricated and Resprayed to Factory Color 100% OEM Highest Quality"
I will be installing it myself, and i think its a fairly easy job to do?

I bought mine 15 months ago from carsteering.com for $285.00... Included the solenoid, but the solenoid that came with it was defective, and my original was fine, so I just reused it. The core charge on mine was much higher ($175) than your ebay link ($60)...
I'd eat the $60, keep your core, buy a rebuild kit and rebuild it at your leisure.
I'd give the ebay one a try. It doesn't say if it included the solenoid, but if you know the one you have is okay, no worries...
One other thing I would do is replace the two grommets (rubber bushings) that go inside the two clamps that hold the rack in place. There was a TSB and part change for the two grommets a long while ago (maybe '95). The rack could develop movement inside the grommets and throw your alignment off, so they redesigned them. I changed mine out when I did the rack. I also swapped out the high pressure hose at the same time.
Below is the grommet ordering detail from Sewell for a '91...
Product #:45516-50010, Lexus OEM Steering Rack Housing Grommet No.1, Quantity:1, Price:$15.51
Product #:45517-50010, Lexus OEM Steering Rack Housing Grommet No.2, Quantity:1, Price:$23.58

Thank you for your reply. I dont know if the solonoid is included. But the whole housing is sweating and i get klonk noises when parking and turning so i have to do something. And a complete gasket kit for the rack and pinion is sky high. i got a shock when i asked at my lexus dealer. i have refurbushed the power steering pump myself and that gasket kit didnt cost that much. But i sure will keep my old rack and pinion in my garage. you never know if you gonna need some part from it
And thanks about the tip with the two grommets. I better get those too when i do the change.

I'm seeing two rebuild kits. One is a power steering gear gasket kit: 04445-50012 for $119.33
The second is a power steering control valve overhaul gasket kit: 04455-50010 for $38.49

But maybe theres also some of the other things there is needed. http://www.lexuspartsnow.com/Page_Pr...gPicture=False
So i think the price for a refurbushed which i can replace on a couple of hours and the price for getting gaskets and maybe not have everything when i have been taking everything apart. Then i cant drive the car.
