Rack and Pinion.. quick question.
I have a 1995 Lexus LS400, and my rack and pinion went bad. I called up the Lexus dealer and this guy told me that this car has three different types of Rack and Pinions is this true??

Elijah,
As far as I know, there's only one. They told me my car needs a new rack, as it's leaking, but the leak is not so bad right now so it's cheaper to keep it filled with power steering fluid. I was quoted $ 3000 for a brand new rack, but you can get a remanufactured one for about $ 400-500.

I have the same issue with my 95 LS 400 so please let me know what you find out and the direction you take. I'm currently looking at replacement options and getting quotes from independant Lexus shops here in Dallas. According to the independant certified Toyota mechanic who works on the car at my home, when the rack and pinion is replaced an alignment job is also needed at the same time so as not to ruin the front tires. He said it would ruin the front tires driving it from my home to an alignment shop. Not sure if he's being overly cautious or not.
Thanks,
Bryan

So did anyone get rack and pinion replaced? My 95 LS400 is also leaking and local tire shop in Dallas area, with good reputation, says they do not even make the rack for this car now and he would have to take it off and have it rebuilt. Is that the only option these days? Anyone?

I actually had my rack and pinion replaced pretty recently on my 95 ls 400. I guess this is a really big problem with the older ls models as well because my sisters 94 has the same problem. For awhile I just kept refilling the fluid but my dad had a friend who was a mechanic and got the job done for really cheap he just had to pay for the parts because he was nice and yes you do need to re align the car after I'm not too sure why but my dad said it was completely necessary and if my alignment was still off I had to tell him to fix it right away. I'm not too sure if my post helps at all but gl with this problem, power steering fluid only cost about 5 bux a bottle but you should get it fixed asap

I got a question about the rack and pinion as well if anyone can help. I bought my 91 about 2 months ago and I put new tires and got an alignment done as well. The car has started to make a knocking sound on the drivers side when I turn the wheel to the left while driving. I mean it can be just slightly turned out and i hear the noise but when I take a long winding left turn man it sounds bad. lately it has got louder and I am really concerned about driving it. When I got the car I did notice the PS was leaking and I was filling it about once a week thinking it was the PS pump and i would fix it later. let me know what you think Gents...

I got a rack for 160 at orrielys with lifetime warranty. I used Internet prices to lower the price, they gave me the price they give to mechanic shops. By the way leaking racks I'ds a Toyota issue on all their cars, I have or had a 1995 Avalon, 1999 Camry and they had the same issue.
