Hi all,

I am going to get my mechanic to do the tranny fluid drain and fill just like the lexls.com tutorial for $20 for his time and labor.

I asked my brothers friend for a quote to do it (just to get an idea) and they are saying that the gasket needs to be replaced since the car is high miles and its old blahblah and they wanna charge me more for it.

Anyways does it really need to be replaced? Its not leaking or anything and I dont wanna do anything extra.

 

which gasket?
the pan gasket is RTV from the factory and isnt really worth changing unlless there's a leak.

the drain plug gasket should be changed.

just drain and refill does not require removal of the pan.

for the drain plug gasket, they looked it up in the computer for me at Advance and found me a small (foamish?) single use washer that was slightly too large, but still does a fine job of sealing. I've gone through several of them with no leaks. Comes in a pack of 3 or 4. ~$3

IIRC, it was greenish on one side and white on the other. Appeared to be made of some type of fiber.


As for the pan gasket, I wouldn't bother unless you really want to change the transmission filter. I haven't bothered yet, and from what I've read it's not necessary maintenance, most LS drivers never replace theirs and transmission longevity isn't a major concern. I'd recommend it if you know that there have been extended periods of tens of thousands of miles (read: bad previous owner) where the transmission fluid was not touched.

then again, preventative maintenance is never a bad idea.

 

Thanks for the input, mine isnt leaking at all so im thinking i wont change it..

but two mechanics are telling me to do it. Im guessing because they obviously wanna make more money by installing but duno if its necessary

 

correct. only reason to change the gasket is a) it's leaking, or b) you remove the pan to replace the filter.

if they didn't even mention the filter but wanted to replace the gasket "because it's old" start looking for a new mechanic.


that is for the PAN gasket, for the PLUG, you definitely want to replace every time you remove it.
