Default Cd error 21

I've seen that code come up on my 1997 LS 400 Cd player (Pioneer)---it did everything yours is doing in the way of making the appropriate sounds- called Pioneer and they said it was a bad spindle motor--- had that checked out and it was fine--- eventually the second technician who tried to fix it found a dirty lens-- don't waste time with those cleaner CD's- he had to pull down the unit to physically clean the lens, and it has worked perfectly since. Change the belts at the same time, and have the mechanism lubed, to quiet down the sounds.

Last week someone put a burnt CD to try and play it and "error 21" came up again. Try an original CD as some burnt CD's wont work, though I did not think that they would give that error message.

You should find instructions on removing the unit at

Code 21 simply means that the drive cannot interpret any information on the disc at all. Essentially, for one reason or the other the disc is unreadable. This is either because of a bad disc or wrong disc type or because of a lens issue.

Post code 21

Hi,

So wrong disc type meaning CD-RW? That is my only trouble. My CD-R's play fine. Unless something is wrong with the actual CD-RW I put in.

I removed the changer, difficult the first time I tried, and took it to a guy who fixes CD's, DVD players, amps, TV's.
Once you think its fixed, don't install it back in the car, but just plug it in car to see if it's working properly, this will save you the trouble of having to remove it again.

Drives must be specifically designed to read cd-rw's. These stock ones were not.
