In the majority of retros I've read about a lot of people still paint the housing black to help with glare. After all, it's still being projected through a piece of plastic which is going to refract a little light back into the housing causing SOME glare. Sure a nice projector retro will cut down on it...

Halogen and a majority of early HID cars in the U.S. don't have auto leveling anyway so that shouldn't hold you back. Does your stock HIDs have auto leveling? Start hacking!
