Default MPG Has gone down the drain

This week I put gas in and wanted to check my mpg. Damn! I am averaging about 13 mpg. My check engine light has been on for awhile but the car runs fine. Any advice?????

Fix the issue making the check engine light go on... For all you know, it could be throwing more codes now than it was when the light first came on.

Take a few minutes and read the codes you have stored: http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/intro/codereading.html

If you have poor MPG then you're probably in need of a tuneup...plugs, wires, caps, rotors, air filter, etc.

Also, one or more of the o2 sensors could be the culprit. As has been suggested, pull the codes so you know what you are looking for!

Those warning lights are there for a purpose and should not be ignored.

no way should mileage be that poor, even with an older vehicle. before my catalytic converters decided to become light-bulbs, I was averaging high teens in town, and mid twenties to even 30 on teh highway. I now know taht I was driving around on at least one failing catalytic converter, original spark plugs, wires, distributors...it was sorely in need of a tune-up. Once i have the exhaust work done I'll know waht I was missing, but already I can tell a difference with what was done trying to troubleshoot the issue.

first consider the mileage since your last good tune-up. Then go looking at the other culprits. I'll be getting my o2 sensors checked soon, that's for sure.

Thanks. I did a tune up before the light came on and I was averaging about 20 mpg then. Sometimes the light goes off for awhile but now it just stays on. I have not pulled any codes. How is this done?
