Default Car won't start!!!

Last night i am cruising on the highway with friends, doing 65-70mph and all of a sudden the check engine light came on and the RPM's dropped to zero, and i would step on the gas and RPM's will not move at all!! so i pull over on the shoulder, car will turn over fine but won't start. Now i am thinking Fuel pump went out, Anyone with any suggestions what might have happened?

I dont know what it is but it sounds like what happend to me when my timing belt went out. It just died all the sudden and wouldnt start. But surely with 198000 miles you arent on the original TB...

not sure if its the timing belt, but i got the car with more than 195k miles and not sure if its been changed. But is there a way to check if the fuel pump is bad?

when you crank the car does it crank normally or does it seem to crank a bit faster and sound kind of higher pitched?
