Looking at buying a 96 LS400
First, I;m new to the forum and would like to introduce myself. I'm looking at buying a 96 LS400 with 28K on it. The dealer is asking $23.5. What is a fair price? The car is Beige with a Tan interior. Not my first choice but the mileage is what is selling me. The car as no options with the exception of a sunroof. I really want a cd changer but after searching this forum I see this can be expensive. Have any of you had experience installing a used unit from a junk yard? Please let me know. Also, if any of you have a carfax account could please run the VIN: JT8BH22F4T0060574. My email address is: jasonnewyork@excite.com. Thanks in advance.

I got the results of the CarFax and they are bad: Theft Reovery, Commercial use and no mileage reports from 1996 to 2000! I wonder what happened those 4 years? I think I'm going to pass on this one. It sounds too good to be true.

If the dealer lets you take it to your own mechanic, inspect it and then buy it.
Otherwise you can take it to another dealership and for $250 they will give you a full report of what has been happening to a car. Stuff you won't find in Carfax.

I really don't even want to go that far retrodrive. If the car has been marked theft recovery, it probably means the the was totalled due to theft and rebuilt. This explains the low mileage, i.e. the speedo was stolen and another was installed. Being born and raised NYC I've learned to stay far away from its cars. This Lexus is too sketchy, Comercial reg in LIC, stolen 2 months later, retitled in Brooklyn and then a lapse in reports for 4 years? NYC inspections are required every year and always appear on CarFax. If I'm going to buy a Lexus I'm doing it right.

Stay away...too good to be true. An extra $2-4K for a certified Lexus is worth it. Remember, those little rattles here and there, alignment problems, A/c losing charge, and others is not worth the cheaper price of a questionable used car. Who knows maybe the airbag won't even deploy in an accident (because the sensor is not there or there is no airbag inside the steering wheel).
