Exclamation Help!

If the older generation LS's are out of Ac coolant(not the newer AC type) and are in need of a recharge, does the AC still run? Let me better state my question: My AC isn't cooling at all, but I also noticed that the AC unit itself isn't engaging. I can't hear the AC clutch engage, and my RPM's don't drop. Is this normal? The AC light does turn on when I hit it press it, and as far as I can tell there is no seperate AC fuse. . . all other fuses check out fine. I don't want to waste money on an expensive recharge when there's some other problem going on. I will also be selling this car soon and don't want to do an expensive retrofit. Any help would be appreciated!

Most a/c compressor clutches will not engage unless the low pressure switch is closed. More than likely this is the issue. But you must ask yourself, if this is the case, where did the freon go? I would have the system professionally checked for leaks before you try to do it yourself.
