Default 98 Transmission issue

My friend bought a Lexus ls400 with 240k miles and he told me everytime he starts up the car and puts it into drive it delays but it doesn’t on reverse then after 5 minutes it drives normally. The seller told him to let the car warm up 2-3 minutes. Any solutions? No engine light

Sounds like the ATF level is too low or the hydraulic pressure is too low. The important first would be to check the level while the engine is working idle.

My 98 Lexus is the same way if I don't let it warm up then it's rough shifting it will go up to 4 grand rpm before shifting but once quarter of a way up on the temp gauge it's fine

All depends really on what temp thermostat. If the weather is 34 degrees and below takes mine about 20 min any thing above 34 like 5 7 minutes that's mine anyways

Definitely check the fluid level and condition, if that looks good you might need to replace a shift solenoid. As they get old, they work better once things are warmed up

always check ATF level after the fluid is warm (after driving for at least 15mins). there should be a "HOT" side of the dipstick.

using the COLD side is a good start, so if the dipstick is completely dry at cold that's a good initial indicator. you add fluid thru the dipstick hole! always use toyota T-IV ATF.\

lastly, this should be obvious but check the fluid level on a level surface!
