Default 98 LS keyless entry dead

About a month ago the keyless entry stopped working. Remote still flashes like normal and the battery is new.

I figured the remote went bad (key was in bad shape anyhow), so I bought a pair of master blanks, cut them and programmed the transponders without any issue. Starts up and drives.

Now I need to program the keyless entry.

Everything goes fine up to step 8 (one lock cycle occurs after cycling the ignition, perfect).

Step 9 is where everything falls apart. Instead of a single cycle, I get two. No long beep and the key is not programmed. Even the original fob does the same thing.

It "hears" the fobs on step 9, even the old one. But it seems like it's rejecting the programming attempt with the double cycle.

Do you think I have a bad module in the car? like it's lost it's fob memory and rejects all programming attempts.

Two beeps indicate a failed attempt. Rather than the instructions telling you to do it slower, I'd suggest the opposite and do it faster. I think instructions like this kind of make it seem like doing it very slowly should work. I think doing it too slowly results in it failing to take.

Thank you for replying.

I don't get any beeps. I get two lock/unlock cycles instead of one, which I was assuming means failure?

it does it when pushing the keyfob buttons on step 9.

It will do it each time you push any keyfob button, on ANY fob. It keeps doing this until the door closes.

Yeah, sorry. Two lock cycles indicates failure. My suggestion is to vary the timing of the sequence. I had several failures programming a new key which I attributed to taking too long on one or more of these steps. When I did the sequence a little faster, it was successful, so I would attempt it again. I'm uploading the factory TSB on programming the locks, FWIW.

Thanks for confirming with the TSB, that helps. I'm *for sure* in registration mode and it'll stay there until I shut the door. It just rejects all programming attempts with the double cycle.

What worries me is that it "forgot" the original key before all this started, which to me indicates a deeper issue...
