so when i got my car sometimes one of my headlights would not turn on, and now one does not turn on at all. what do i have to change and about how much wil it cost????

 

Your HID bulb maybe out.
Good way to check is swap out the bad hid bulb to the other side and see if it works.

 

Are your HIDs factory or aftermarket; either way it sounds like you may need either a new igniter or a new bulb if you purchased from the after market some money might be spent getting it fixed if their from the factory and you can tell lexus off and might not pay much of nothing to get them replaced especially if you talk to corporate lexus they are the best im tellin ya.

 

ok well heres the deal, they just turned back on when i went to go get gas..... and they are factory so what do you think ???

 

Still trying switching the left and right bulbs with each other. If the problem moves to the other side then the problem is bulb related. Do that and check back with us.

 

if u do need a new one.. my new bulb (for one) was around $450...and it doesn't match well with your original bulb unfortunately...

Damn man you're insane go to ebay and buy a d2r bulb you can get a set for $120 shipped.

95jdmej1 it sound like a loose connection. If a bulb burns than it doesnt turn on, it can also be a problem with a ballast I had a hella ballast which would turn on whenever it wanted to and now it doesnt turn on at all. Dont go to the dealership for this go to ebay and you thank me later. Good luck.

 

Its probably the bulb. I checked your profile and you have a 98 gs, alot of burn time for the bulbs. The bulbs don't actually just die one day and thats it, they have no gas inside. The salts inside the bulbs change form over a prolonged period of time. The hid ballast is designed to go up to 25k volts to start up the bulbs. The typical start up voltage is around 18k volts when initially starting the lights on ( thats called a cold start up ) but lets say you had your lights on and then you turn them off and on again, this causes the voltage to spike up to 24k volts, this is called a hot restrike. If you look at a hid bulb it has a bottom wire and a side wire leading to the top of the bulb. Once you turn on your lights theres a high current of electricity thats passed between those 2 points ( read above ), and that ignites the salts inside the sphere under massive ammounts of preasure, the enclosure is a sphere because a sphere is the strongest geometrical object.

The light intensity and the light wave length ( the color ) is determined by the composition of the salts inside, hence the reason why bulbs turn bluer over time and get dimmer because the salts brake down over time. When the salts inside achive a low ignition state because of decomposition the minimum amount of voltage needed to cause a reaction is around 25K+ volts which exceeds the ballast's capacity. Now that you understand the basic anatomy of a hid system you can now understand why sometimes your bulb fails to start up, if the reaction state of the salt inside the bulb around 24k volts, the ballast and ignitor sometimes can't achive the required voltage because of other power sources ( a shortage of power ). Oh and I do agree if you pay $450 for each bulb you should be whipped for your imputence! . And you don't have to buy d2r bulbs, d2s cost cheaper and are really easy to modify to fit a d2r housing with no side affects its just a DOT rule, kinda like driving 47 in a 45 mph zone, its OKAY but technically your still braking the law!

 

wow i didn't even notice the responces thanks alot VICESTAN, thats some good info. but i left them alone and now they are acting up again, the right one this time. i understand all that about the ballast but now i think i need a new bulb so what do you guys mean by d2r and d2 i just want to know whats the cheapest and easiest to intsall HID.... can you fill me in so i can start searching Ebay... thanks for all the help
