Default HID Headlight Housing

I just got off the phone with Carson Toyota and they told me that aftermarket HID manufacturers were no longer able to sell them because they are not DOT approved. He told me that it is now illegal to sell them. He also told me that I could not fit a new HID housing into my GS which currently has no HID.

I was originally calling Carson to get pricing on HID headlight housings. It is my understanding that lexus has 3 types of HID housings, one with green tint, one which is black chrome and another which is titanium.

I don't think he knows what he is talking about. Can someone please confirm or refute this for me. Thanks.

ok, a lot of questions here so let's go slow

1) yes hid sales are technically illegal now and the fine could be huge, so yes, it's banned, and i am not surprised that carson doesn't sell it anymore
2) the hid housing (with bulbs and ballast) will fit in the car no problem, and you can actually power it up no problem. i know it for sure coz' i have that exact setup, you only lose the autoleveling computer
3) the hid housing uses the d2r bulb, so of course you can't use the 9006 hid bulb from the hid kits (just in case someone wonders)
4) hid hosing, there is the dark chrome, the pure silver chrome, and also the green tinted chrome. the titanium is on the sport design version, it's VERY VERY expensive. i could be wrong, but there is also a black chrome housing, but i am not sure if that has hid or not

Default options

so what are my options if I want to upgrade to HID. I can buy the housing from Carson, but what are my options with respects to bulbs? I think that oem is 4100k? I am hoping to get 6000k like you rominl. Thanks.

You will need the housings, ballasts, and bulbs. You are right about the OEM bulb temp so you will need to buy the 6000k separately. Make sure they are D2R bulbs. The OEM ballasts are nice since they fit right underneath the housings but buying the full OEM HIDs (housings, ballasts, bulbs, levelling computer (which is "useless" for your needs)) can get expensive.

You might try the classifieds or eBay too.

neo said it all, you need housing, ballasts, and bulbs, the whole deal. just get the housing and you can't fit the hid kits in it. and the 6000k bulbs you will need to get them extra
