Sounds like they have an engineering challenge on their hands, assuming the GS-F gets made (I'll through a wild guess out there and optimistically say 75% chance).

But perhaps somehow, the choice of standard GS powerplant may have bearing? Will Lexus get criticized again for simply shifting the prior gen GS engines into the next gen, a la 2GS=>3GS (GS 430)?

I think it will be dissapointing if the next-gen GS gets unchanged engines that the current GS has right now.

IMHO, the V6 GS should offer at least 315-320 HP with great fuel economy, the hybrid should offer at least 350-360 HP with vastly improved fuel economy, the GS V8 should offer at least 400 HP or more with good fuel economy, and the GS F should have at least 500 HP. That would make the next-gen GS very competitive, powertrain-wise.

It would be great if Toyota used some new technology like Valvematic or Dual VVT-iE on the engines.

If there was to be a "GS F", I think it would be best for Lexus to keep the 1LR-GUE 4.8L v10 exclusive like the 1GZ-FE 5.0L V12 in the Toyota Century.

I think there would be 2 possibilities of straight gas engine choices if so:

1) A new larger displacement UR series V8, with tech. passed down from the 1LR-GUE and 2UR-GSE.
2) An all new V10 with technology passed down from the 1LR-GUE 4.8L V10.

Not to mention that a GSh would slot in there somewhere. Will Lexus continue with the performance hybrid route, or go efficiency and let the GS-F take the 0-60 hp crown, etc.?

BTW, GS F with NO hyphen!!! IS F and LFA officially have no hyphens in their official names.

Yes I know but it's hard to break the habit.

I like where you're going with your choices . They sound more appealing than my choices, especially your second choice .

Honestly, an all-new V10 for the GS F would be absolutely dazzling!

Here I was just being realistic and thinking a modified IS F V8 would do .

Why not both like the RX450h ? Lots of power and performance with vastly improved fuel economy.

Hmmmm and to add to it, the V-10 is smaller than a V-8, near V-6 in size. So no huge hoods and bulges needed.....It is a mid rear ship engine though and seems everything (oil pumps etc) are behind the engine in the LFA.

The GS will need some power....
The new Jag XF 5.0 has a 385hp engine
New 5 series will get turbo V-8 with 400hp
E550 makes 380hp
Infiniit M56 will likely make in excess of 420hp

Another option is maybe Lexus puts the LS 600 engine/battery in the next GS hybrid? A 438hp GSh?

Actually based on what I have learned from Toyota technical documents, the LFA V10 is actually smaller *and* lighter than the V6 2GR-FSE found in several Lexus models . That definitely makes it smaller and lighter than the 2UR-GSE V8 in the IS F.

It could be one of the all time greats as time passes......

What sucks is the 3.5 V-6 in the IS/GS are still near fastest in class but where the IS got documented in magazines, the GS 350 has been tested once I think? The 0-60 in 5.3 run in C&D (AWD too).

I hope Lexus learned to bump the power MMC and not carry over the same engines, then bump them like they did in the GS. Not a good move.

Since the same engine is used across the board, I really can't see displacement increasing for Lexus only with the V-6. The reason I am talking about the V-6 is b/c I fear the next V-8 will continue to be "under the radar" in regards to power and performance. Its solid but not "wow" like the old GS 400.

GS 500 just sounds sexy. Do it Lexus.

The damn 4.6 should be producing 420hp at least. Dammit Lexus, stop jerking us around

Valvematic, Dual VVT-iE, or both would make the Lexus V6 and V8 engines close to, if not class-leading in terms of power and fuel economy.

It also wouldn't hurt to see some LFA technology/innovation on next-gen Lexus engines.

I also really hope the GS and LS AWD models are not short-changed with the V8 engine in the future. They should all be making the full 380 HP from the 4.6L V8 right now.
