I've searched the forum several times and have seen that this has been discussed several times, but I have yet to find a final answer as to whether it has been done before.
Has anyone successfully retained the factory volume **** on the radio bezel to work on an aftermarket stereo? Please let me know if you or someone you know has done this, or if you know where I can find the info to do so. Thanks.

Another way of doing it is using the **** to drive the head unit with Infra Red signals (emulating a remote control). I built one for my Kenwood head unit and it works quite well.
The idea is to use one of a PIC microcontroller's A/D converter to read the **** position and send IR 'Volume Up' and 'Volume Down' commands accordingly. The 'push' can be converted to anything, I made it scan between radio stations.
The total cost is < $20 if you build your own board. The advantage: it can be made to work on any infra-red remote capable head-unit without modifying it. The catch: the software would need to be modified for different HU brands (unless someone invests a lot of effort and add an IR receiver to make it learn new commands).
