I am using the factory Pioneer headunit with Dynaudios and a JL Audio Sub running on a Alpine 5 ch amp. The system sounds very good while keeping the stock radio look in tact.
The question I have is would I hear an even greater improvement in sound quality by switching just the headunit to either the factory Nakamichi or Mark Levinson units?
It's not really that simple as just "bolting them in". The wiring harnesses are different between the Nak and ML as well as the Pioneer. Not worth the headache!
I have a 1993 SC300 and just swapped out the premium system for the Nak. The Nak is clearer, can't tell if it's the amp or HU, but the sound is a bit crisper. I'm sure there will be a bigger difference once i swap the speakers, too. One other thing is that the radio reception is better with the Nak head in my opinion.
Unfortunately the GS 2nd generation isn't as nice for "dropping in" another head unit. Seems like all the good stuff for ease of modding, is going to the SC.
