DSP vs EQ
How "crazy" is the DSP unit? It's very easy to get lost in the settings. With the better DSP units you'll have time alignment, a choice of parametric eq or graphic eq and possibly crossover settings.
Simple way - 30 band graphic EQ. More complex - parametric eq. Even more complex - DSP.
But, as Retro and so many of the guys on the board have mentioned, get the installation right first. No amount of DSP can "bandaid" fix a bad install.

Do the install first, and if you notice any gaps in frequencies (not with an RTA...but by ear) then I'd get an EQ.
A DSP is more of a toy/luxury...

i already have a sound system in my car. its very nice and clear. i'm just rebuillding my box in my trunk for a more cleaner look and design. while i'm redoing my trunk i thought it be fun to get a DSP. i have an eclipse headunit and plan on getting the eclipse dsp model 2301.
There are a couple of things that make me cautious about the DSP unit. First thing is "greater than 80db" for the signal to noise ratio. This isn't what I would call a really good number. Mid 90's is what I would consider average. Also the channel seperation isn't listed. A 7 band equalizer is VERY coarse for adjustments - I'd recommend at least a 30 band for any serious system.
You'll lose a bit of clarity and detail if you hook it up to this DSP. Save the bucks for something else!
