Default Advice with audio...

Hi,
I have a 1992 ls400 and I have just replaced my nakamichi HU with a pioneer DEH-5900ib. i had bestbuy do it for me because i have no expeience with this stuff. I do like it although one thing i noticed is the radio no longer works, i was assuming it just wasn't compatible. The main reason i wanted the aftermarket HU was so i could use my ipod in the car without the battery on the ipod dying all the time. I thought it might improve the sound a bit... but as far as i can tell, it hasn't. I am now thinking of replacing the speakers too. Would this improve the loudness/quality of sound? The stock nak deck was 20Wx4... and my new HU is 50Wx4 so im guessing i need better quality speakers to take advantage of the extra power. Do the 1992 ls400s have component speakers? If so how will replacing them with coaxials affect the sound?

Any help is much appreciated.

HUH?? You went from replacing the stock HU to an aftermarket one and now it doesn't work?? The new radio? If this is the case, take it back to Best Buy and have them figured out why the radio is not working or have them replace it; assuming you just bought it. As far as the speakers are concerned, the factory speakers on the first gen(may be larger for later gens, never looked) is only 4". Needless to say, changing the speakers will make a world of difference, and if you are even the slightest bit handy yourself, I would suggest having the speaker baffle enlarged a little to accomodate a 5.25" speaker. You will be very happy with the results; assuming you pick a good quality speaker to begin with.

The stock speakers are components in the front and coaxials in the back doors. (Then there's an 8" subwoofer behind the back seat, but you already knew that didn't you. )
Anyhow, there's a great tutorial on how to fit 5 1/4" speakers in the doors on http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/audio/fspeaker.html (If you all of a sudden feel that it can be even better, you're right. Check the LS400 Audio setup thread for more ideas on how to improve the sound.)
Also check http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/ for the rest of the great write-ups on that site. They are really helpful and filled with pictures to help you get along.

They probably just forgot to plug the antenna in the back. Happens all the time.

would i be able to just replace the component speakers with coaxials? after reading up on it... components sound kind of confusing. Also are infinity kappas, JBLs, or pioneers good 5.25 speakers?

first lets adress the problem...
u said your radio doesnt work? please elaborate. do u mean that it just doesnt sound as good as it used to? or do u mean cd changer no longer works? the factory cd changer will not be compatible.
im wondering if they got the factory sub to work? most installers with that company dont understand/dont have enough experience to integrate the factory sub. its quit easy and if that is the case i can show u/tell u how to wire it up. i've got a 1990 ls400 and ran the factory sub for a few weeks until i could afford better.

changing out the front and rear speakers will give u more clarity. however, the average joe might not notice the change. the average joe just wants that factory sub to work again so that they have that little bit of bass again. changing out your 4" for 5.25" speakers will not give you that little bit of bass. just for the record.

Ok well...

1. the radio is just all static on all stations. so i guess the antena isnt in... im bringing it back in today.

2. I do not know if they hooked everything up to the factory sub as it hasnt been working for the past few months. i believe my amp is blown. but i think they may have because i brought them a harness for the install but they said it wouldnt work with the amplified system and they had to special or me a harness with RCAs on it.

3. i want new speakers because i feel the stock ones just arnt very good... I have turned on the high pass filter on the HU so only frequencies above 125hz will go to the speakers. this is the only way the music will not be distorted. and am assuming with better speakers (pioneers, alpines, jbls infinities) i wont have this much distortion
