Default Swapping ML Sub for JL Sub - How Many Watts Can I Go?

i wanna replace the 10" ML Sub with a JL 10" Sub.

the ML is too weak and delicate, i wanna just swap them out. How many watts can I go up to without having to replace the stock amp?

thanks

As many as you want. Most quality aftermarket subs will have no problem handling the output of the factory amp. If you get a high excursion sub, then you won't be using it to the full potential.

Do you know the sensitivity of the ML factory sub? You should get an aftermarket sub that has at least the same sensitivity. If not, your sub will sound even weaker than it is now. That's because you can't adjust the gains on the factory amp to compensate for the difference in sensitivity.

Not only that u have to make sure it has the same impedance as the stock sub. If u get a subwoofer thats lower than u can mess up ur stock amplifier. And if the impedance is higher than the subwoofer will end up gettin less power.

I didn't even think about the impedance. I just assumed that he knew that. Good catch.

the ML sub has a higher voicecoil impedance than usual, 14 ohms
I dont think any JL audio subwoofers can be wired to that impedance unless u get more than 1

Closest they have is dual 6 ohm which if wired in a series would give u a 12 ohm load, but it's still lower than the stock. It'd probably would be alot easier to add a seperate subwoofer amplifier with the JL subwoofer. Thats of course if u have to stick to JL audio. There are other companies that make subwoofers that might drop right in.

If you can pick an IB10 it is 8 ohm and it's a great free air sub. I've got one in mine did an LLC ran a JL Audio 250/1 and put it in the stock position. Sounds good to me.

this is all so subjective. i dont believe all jlIB subs are 4 ohm. i do know that if you are running this sub you pick on the factory amp then i cant fathom you will get good output from the amp if you somehow get to the right ohm load. i recomend a external amplifier and a jl or focal free air sub( also known as IB infinite baffle.....no box)
