Default Nav question

Sorry, Im new and did try search.. pls go easy on me
Anyway I see there may or may not be a nav hack that allows one to punch in addresses while driving or finding points of interest.
My question. Has anyone questioned Lexus big cheese on why they do this?
I've come thru (2) Honda's 06 Ridgeline & Pilot. Both factory Navs allow you to do these things while you drive.
Also have a pioneer AVIC Z1- It makes you do the hack... but that one is easy! jump a wire & ground another.... anyway just curious what the big deal is... they all have the disclaimer screen that will help them in court if someone does something not so bright. Thanks!

they have to do it because it's unsafe and probably illegal in most places to fiddle with it while you drive. it's a more involved than just tuning a radio station.

it's like handing someone a hot plate at a restaurant and saying "careful this plate is hot". what's the first thing people do? they touch the plate. Just like the warning on the navigation, "Don't stare at this while you drive" oh well I just want to change where I'm going...how do you spell Disneyland again? OH SNAP A SEMI TRUCK!

It's more of a liability thing than anything.

Yea they have to cover their own a**, if not they'd have to be shelling out big bucks in lawsuits.

I suppose we should be grateful that Lexus cares about us where as Honda could care less about the customers safety. I guess my point was that with Honda you can have all these functions right from the factory nav units without jumping things out.

Does the Honda use touch screens? As far as I know only touch screen technology is locked out in cars. Controller type Nav are not. Not sure why other than maybe they are more safety concerns.

Yes Honda has touch screen and voice - same as lexus. It does not lock out during motion.
All & all I do like this Navi better... even more than the AVIC - Z1..
The accuracy, even though is only as good as the data provider, is better than the 3 others I have had. Alpine makes Hondas Nav. I do know my ex wifes navigation in her 2004 infinity I 35 is horrible.. not sure if they improved in the last 3 yrs

it became a federal law in 2005 that front screens shouldnt work while driving. even aftermarket front screens are hooked to the gyro.

"some" aftermarket ones are hooked to a gyro. Most are still easily bypassible.

My installer was able to bypass mine on my AVN5500. It is a safety issue to be able to punch in addresses while the car is in motion. I've almost hit a couple of parked cars messing with unit, but I still prefer to be able to punch in a new address or do a search and watch(well play) a movie while in motion.
