Default Carputer Question

There are a million pre and post build Carputer threads. Rather then bump them all for the info I need, I thought Id make another "Carputer reliability thread"

I just wanted to ask the people that have had their systems running in their SC's (for a year or so) if they've had any problems / issues with them?? Condensation, etc.??

I've had mine for about 2 years now...ZERO problems...

biggest thing to worry about is mounting your HD vertically instead of flat to prevent the platters from cracking on bumpy roads. You could also just stick to 2.5" HD's because they're meant to take some vibration...

I'm hooking up XM into mine right now and doing a custom center area, can't wait to get it done...

emerald,
we've built 2 carputer setups in the SC with NO problems what-so-ever. No condensation, nothing.

Only problem we have is finding a place to put the carputer itself. ACleanSC4 and I are currently notching up our carputer setup with some new goodies!!! Pics should be up within a week or two.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

edit: LOL. I guess tony and i found the same thread!

I'm about to install my carputer..i dont think there will be any problems. I put provisions for shock absorption as well as used notebook HDs.

For So Cal, condensation shouldnt really be too big of an issue. Perhaps if we were in the deep south, perhaps.

nothing complicated em, look into www.opussolutions.com for their power supply/startup/shutdown solution...

I'm using their 150w unit right now, works flawlessly..

So what are the pros and cons versus a AVIC type head unit? woops I just saw the 2k PLUS price tag on the head units.

Do the Carputers do AM and FM now, I know they used to do FM with tuners but I didnth think AM was available.

Pros:
Unlimited MP3 music
Navigation
Wi-fi (where available)
Unlimited moves, music videos, show clips, etc etc. without having to change discs
XM satellite now available
Space is basically unlimited for storage
Depreciation minimal
Charge your cell phone via USB. LOL
You can still watch DVD discs and listen to your personal CD via cd/dvd rom.
Anything and EVERYTHING you can do on your home computer, you can do in your car.
the cool factor

Cons:
No AM (never researched)
FM stations not that clear
Finding a place to mount monitor (i think us SC guys have that problem)
You have to download your own music videos, movies, and music to keep up with the times

There's plenty of info on www.mp3car.com
