My goals are NOT to compete in IASCA events. With all the money I'm going to spend on the rest of my car, I just wanted something that sounds clean. I'm not looking for the highest db from my subs, rather I'm looking for tight bass and crisp highs. It may sound cliche' I know, but I want to do all this on a budget. It's not that I don't like the best, it's just that I honestly don't think I would be able to fully appreciate it. Thus, I still want quality, yet it doesn't have to be the best is what I'm saying.
The wonderful world of competition and their end results...
"Brand X speaker wire...used the most by competitors"
"Brand Y speaker...the most winning speaker for IASCA for the last gazillion (that's 13) years!"
Competitor (place name here) uses (place brand name here) and so should you!
If and when IASCA gets the red tape and politics out of the way then I'll compete. Levels out the playing field.
Now here's something they should try for fun. NO sponsorship or teams. Just bring what you would like to compete in. NO politics. Unfortunately, there will always be a loudmouth (Zausmer? ) among the bunch but we can try to ignore them. Instead of having 20 out of 50 competitors running the same equipment (place "the most winning speaker/amp brand here) they should run what they feel is best and not fall for the hype.
- The extension cable is KWE-600B. It's $75, which is expensive due to small quantity production plus tooling costs.
- I just put in an MRD-F752 and it sounds wonderful. There's an effortlessness or lightness or something to the sound, and a lot of dynamic headroom. Plus it's much more efficient than the usual amps or even other V12s. Go for it!
- That said, yeah, you should probably upgrade the factory speakers first IF they're not up to snuff. (I have no idea if they are or aren't)
- Alpine never had a great subwoofer reputation, but the newly developed "Type R" line has surprised a lot of people. And they look so cool! Each brand of subs has a somewhat different sound flavor, so it can be a matter of personal taste.
Percy, IASCA will NEVER get read of red tape. Also to each is his own. What might sound good to one judge may not sound good to another. Its just one of those things you deal with.
Retro - IASCA has the reputation of being the SQ organization but they do give some weight to SPL ( but not nearly as much as USAC or MECA ). I know what ya mean about the subjective viewpoints of the judging - that's why I made the comment in another post that we had about SPL being objective & easier to judge. Of course, there's plenty of cheating going on behind those walls of woofers ( hidden amps; modded amps & processors, etc ). Also ( like U & Percy ) don't think too much of Alpine speakers - multimedia's OK though.

I would pick IDQ vs Type R subs any day.
The worst nightmare for a SPL judge is to go judge an IASCA event and for a SQ judge to go to SPL. Both would probably tear their hair out!
