hey guys!! im new to my lexus as of 2 days ago =) im 19 and have been saving for abit for my 92 sc400, my question is that i think my amp is blowen or not working.. i have no mids and highs and the sound is really muddy, does anyone know how many watts the amp is with the revicer too so i can match it up when i get new stuff... also is it pretty hard to rewire everything with my kenwood deck.. ???? please let me know. thanks again for hearin me out

Congrats and welcome to ClubLexus. Your watts question, and quite possibly every other question that new owners tend to ask has already been discussed on this forum (quite possibly repeatedly), and can be easily found using the search function.

 

I just purchased a kenwood headunit from another member. At first i thought i could just go to a stereo shop and they could get everything I needed to get a complete plug n' play install. Well............. I was wrong. I wanted to use the factory speakers, so from after reading a few posts i thought i could just go to Best Buy and use the harness they sell for any 87' and up Toyota. Plugged in the harness and Head unit and nothing worked. Then I found out the wiring is different on Lexus'. Read some more and other people were saying just rewire all the speakers. Well, I'm lazy so I tried to find an easier way. After looking at the wiring diagrams I found out that all the speakers run to the factory amp in the trunk under the CD changer. So i tore apart the trunk, pulled out the changer and the amp and found the harness I needed to use. Then i bought some wire, actually a lot of wire, and ran the wire under the carpet, under the rear seat, through the rubber grommet that's on the panel behind the rear seat, to the trunk, and started wiring for the speakers. Got all that done then hooked up the power, ground, and remote to the HU, and it worked fine. The I had to figure out how to get the sub to work, read some more. Said screw it, went to Best Buy bought an amp they had on display for $60, then to a stereo shop and bought the RF amp install kit. Went home and ran the wires for the amp, then ran the wires to the factory sub, turned the gain on the amp way down, turned on the radio and everything worked just fine.

I know it sounds like a lot of work but im sure it's a lot less work than pulling off both doors and all the rear panels. If you try to do it the way I did and need some more info. pm me and I'll help the best I can. Good Luck.

real fast. what about using the cable thats already being run to the amp, and just cut out the amp and wiring them all together down there instead of running all new cable... would that work? or is it just a weird tought that came out because i have had one 2 many engery drinks tonight =)

 

Yes, it works and is alot less of a pain.

 

Im not quite sure what you mean. If your saying you just want to cut them from the harness that goes into the radio, I think it can be done but im not sure. The speaker wires that are connected to the radio are all positive feeds and there is a system ground for the negative feeds. Also, I believe all these wires run through the amp then to the speakers so im not quite sure how that is going to work since there wont be any power going to the amp. Just for piece of mind i just went ahead and wired them all they way to the back. Honestly, its not that bad, a day should be more than enough time if you have everything you need. I could have had the job done in a couple of hours but I took my time and a few breaks, plus I had to go buy the amp and wiring kit for the sub. IMO any DIY'er could get this job done without to many problems. Good Luck, and let us know what the outcome is.
