Carputer - SC guys what do you think
For now, it'll be in my glove box next to my mobo so i'll have extra connectors there. I have a removable tray HD case that will go from my car to my desktop when I want to transfer files...
I also bought a USB wireless G card so I can copy files that way too!
Oh yeah, I forgot about the OPUS 150w power supply I bought for $200...it automatically turns on the PC when the keyis in the ignition and turns off the PC properly when the key is removed...
aliga: i'll post pix when i install the screen and have it in the car...
[B]Since the motherboard we're using only has 1 PCI slot, we're still deciding what we should use it for. I might try out a TV/radio tuner and see how that works on the road with the antenna. B]
also... does anyone know of a really good GPS software.... something comparable to those found on stock cars (with voice assistance and all that fun stuff)?
I have the Delorme Earthmate USB GPS unit, bought it at Best Buys for about $130...it comes with Street Atlas 2004 but I don' t think it talks to you.
Routis, nRoute and some others are the ones that talk to you...
A little update: things didn't come out the way I wanted them to, such as mounting everything in the radio area...I'm throwing it in the glove box until I find a better place for my version 2.
Celebrating Lexus & Toyota from Around the Globe
Tony, Ill be in LA next week, hopefully I can meet you, Thang, and the rest of the crew if time permits.
Maybe I can get a sneak peak at the setup
Somethings that gave me problems:
1) if the monitor isn't indented on the bottom, it will be very hard to see the screen. It's viewable from top down but not bottom up. So the way our dash slants, makes it hard to see if you were to mount it flush.
2) bondo cracks, cracks, and then cracks some more....sanding down the surface immediately before applying helps tremendously in bonding.
3) measurements are critical...i didn't take enough time on this aspect and eyeballed it pretty much all the way...
So this is my version 1...starting on version 2 as soon as I get an extra glove box to work with. I'm already brewing up new custom plans.
I know it looks like crap...but I know my 2nd version will be 10x better...stay tuned...

"Those panels are passive matrix and you would be MUCH happier with an active matrix (TFT) screen. Passive matrix LCD's have a very narrow viewing angle. You have to look at them almost dead-on to see the picture whereas an active matrix screen has a much wider viewing angle and is more suitable for use in a car."

I might give the Lilliput a try also, we'll see how it goes...
Since my post, I fabbed up a little sandwich case for the mobo & HD and managed to fit it in the radio area as I planned before!! The power supply will remain in the glove box though because that will generate the most heat.
New install coming!
