Thanks for the offer Bean but I think most people will be using at least a 160gb or higher. I plan on using at least a 250 gb to be able to satisfy my needs. Thousands of mp3's, tons of movies, bunch of emulators (snes, gba, mame...)

I had a lot of other plans before working on my carputer but since people are interested now, I'll get started!

LOL. this WILL get done. 2 guys, and one professional to offer some tips. Not a problem!

Aliga, we will not be keeping the stock head unit or cd changer.

Isn't another guy here almost done with his carputer project? I could have sworn I read about this a long time ago, but it wasn't very stock looking...it needed to be refined somewhat, but whoever he is I'm sure he could give you all some input. Another question I have is why all the secrets? Everytime I read about someone and a project I'm seeing more and more "it's hush hush for now" or "I'll reveal more details later"...please explain what's up with that? I mean to each his own but why post "I'm doing a secret project and I won't tell you about it"....just one of those things that makes you go HMMM??

mikeloc, everything is all up in the air right now, as for hardware/software. what else do you need to know?

parts:
touchscreen: a couple of companies out there such as Lilliput or Xenarc.
mini motherboard such as a epia m10000
then whatever else we need if we decide to add GPS or other cool stuff...

the hush hush parts is just basically how we will be moutning everything and having it done cleanly.

There's really no secret...

I just measured the width of the stock headunit, at the smallest portion(at the bottom) it meaures 7"

Will that limit the screen size or are you guys planning to cut into the center console trim? Becuase the lilliput and xenarcs are greater than 7" in width.

we did the same measurements. 7" is the max that we can put in there. should be very little modification. we're working out a deal right now for some monitors hopefully. we'll know on monday. they're local to us!

store price is $469...i'll be going there monday to get some alternative pricing for special customers

Since we will be molding this unit into the face of the radio trim, we'll be redoing a lot of things such as removing the volume button...I don't think a lot of modding is required..biggest issue is where to put it without making it too hot...

I've got the same exact thing sitting on my desk at work... just different power supplies and solid state storage. It's a thin client based on windows XP embedded.

Motherboard: 100-200
RAM: 50
HDD: 50-200
Power: 70
Slimline DVD/CDRW: 100
44 to 40 pin Adaptor(x2): 20

LCD touchscreen: Varies.

I could build, install and configure the unit. I'd just need help getting that OEM look out of the LCD.

I really don't need it right now, but if someone else is interested in doing it, I'll build it, configure it, and then if you're in the New England area, we'll work through the install. If you've got any questions feel free to ask. I kinda do this stuff for a living.

oh yeah... Micro ITX is coming.

"Pimp my ride" by M.T.V did a car with a car computer too. i believe it was the scion epsiode. looks tight. the software they use is from drivesoft.net . is it possible to connect the climate controls.? if you can possible get a bigger screen. more room to work with the climate controls panel out of the way. i also read the GPS on carupter isn't has good as a regular GPS unit.
